Hospitality
Mrs. G.T. H.
When it comes to being hospitable to guests in your
home, or anywhere else, being relaxed and
honest is the key. Too often we may want to put on
airs -be
who we are not -to impress others. Being false can only lead to troubles because who we truly
are will always be found out. Have the heart of Christ who was always truthful and supped with all who would
come. Those who were uncomfortable around the Lord had something they wanted to keep unspoken.
Hide not yourself from Jesus and let Him allow you to
shine for His glory. He knows your heart so, .. .Be a lover of hospitality (Titus 1:8)
and ...Use hospitality one to another without grudging (1 Peter 4:9).
Now, lets consider entertaining in your home. Do you
enjoy being around people who are stuffy and haughty? I would venture to say that most of you
do not. When you attend functions, you want to be at ease and free to enjoy fine companionship and good
food. You do not want to constantly worry about how straight you are sitting or if your pinky is so-so.
Not that you should ever be ill-mannered.
So, when you invite guests to your home, prepare a
relaxed and pleasant atmosphere. Do not be concerned if you do not have the finest furniture or
china. Neat, tidy, and cozy are very agreeable and preferable by most.
Greet your guests warmly and be sincere about making
them feel at home. Offer a quick tour so they can find the facilities without asking. Some
people are quite shy about asking for the powder room. Make pleasant conversation and try to include everyone.
Do not be the center of attention. Let all mingle to get to know one another.
When it comes to refreshments, have everything easily
accessible. Put like items together and always have enough. You do not want unfilled,
unsatisfied guests. Inform everyone when they may help themselves. If you have some timid guests, ask a close
friend to start the serving line. Some people do not want to get up first; especially if they are
unfamiliar with your home and group of friends.
Be aware of guests who are sitting alone or seem shy.
Offer to prepare their refreshments for them and introduce them to others. Being mindful of your company's comfort -physical,
emotional, and spiritual - is the most important aspect of hospitality. Do not be concerned
if your cake topples or a huge dust bunny makes its way from under the couch - no matter. You
can not be perfect. Our Lord Jesus was the only perfect person to walk this earth. But, you can be an example
of His love and hospitality. Therefore, if you are warm and gracious, sensitive and real, flexible and
calm, your heart is what your guests will remember.
